The rise of James Morrison

With three sell out UK tours and his debut album Undiscovered cited as one of the top albums of 2007 and a Brit Award for 'Best British Male', James Morrisons career continues to bloom.

It may sound like the stuff dreams are made of. However, James’ troubled upbringing and the fact that he failed his music A Level have been well documented in the press. Before signing to Polydor, James was playing the working-men’s clubs between periods of signing on.

Through New Deal for Musicians, James worked with Access to Music’s Music Industry Consultancy Service where he was assigned a mentor.

'I’ve always loved music' James told ATM 'but it wasn’t until about two years ago that I got into it full-time. New Deal allowed me free time to write. It helped me loads'.

James got his lucky break one night when performing at an open mic night. Spencer Wells (famed for discovering David Gray and Damien Rice) was in the audience and spotted his potential.

His popularity grew quickly following a performance on Later with Jools Holland and a tour supporting Corinne Bailey Rae. His debut album sold half a million copies, but to James the success he has achieved so far is not his motivation.

“Of course I want to pack out stadiums, but mainly I want to make good music. I want to be successful but I want to play music because I love music and the way it makes me feel. If I can make others feel that way then I’ll be happy'.
