The UK’s foremost dance duo, Basement Jaxx, delivered a presentation to students at the British Academy of New Music on 31 October 2007.
Felix and Simon took students on a journey from their small Brixton studio in the mid-1990s, where they worked predominantly as DJs/re-mixers, through to the now legendary live and recording act, famed for number one albums and singles across the globe with headline performances at many major festivals.
Basement Jaxx are renowned for their festival appearances, which sees the DJs joined by an array of musicians, vocalists and dancers in a Rio carnival-style explosion. The presentation focused on the many complex creative, technical and practical considerations involved in scaling up their performances to work at major festival level. The talk also featured footage from the band’s live DVD and tracks from their last studio album Crazy Itch Radio.
Simon & Felix said:’We're always interested in meeting and hearing new talent and this is a great way to interact with young musicians whilst at the same time offering some insight to the industry that might help them on their way’.
Basement Jaxx generously waived their fee for this event and instead asked the money to be spent on music technology equipment for the British Academy. The centre purchased a Moog keyboard. Thank you, Simon and Felix!
Ex-BANM student Ami Richardson has recently been touring as guest vocalist with Basement Jaxx, after being introduced to them by one of her tutors.
