ATM Studios York is located at the Jam Factory, a commercial music studio which has been adapted and equipped in order to provide a attractive teaching and learning environment. York itself has a vibrant music scene that embraces both popular and dance music scenes.

The centre is in its sixth year and continues to generate a positive learning culture fostered by a small but committed team of tutors offering excellent pastoral support. The centre is in touch with the heart of the local community and promotes a wide range of gigs and other events in the city.

York centre students have been well represented at ATM regional and national events. Bands have included The Snooks, Dysfunction, Manifesto and Five Inch Kettle, with Cenk Sayinli creating programmed/sequenced music. Jamie Pashley, Phil Goodrick and Charlotte Webb are all establishing themselves firmly on the local scene and further afield. The centre has been involved in York’s Music Live and tutors regularly represent ATM as judges at band and acoustic competitions.

NEWS

The latest... Student Gaby Milner is touring with Hi-Jack Oscar, while Laura Finnerty is working at local radio station Stray FM running their summer roadshows. Former student Alan Bardet is now assistant manager at York's Barfly venue. York's ATOMFEST at the Tap 'n' Spile was a huge success attracting an audience of around 300 including Alistair Griffin of Fame Academy.

Tidal Fury
Rockers Tidal Fury are the hottest band in the north right now. Having supported Towers of London, Dirty Rig and Switchers, they will be warming up for the Tony Jepson band when they play in York later this summer. 23-year old guitarist Graham Evans is endorsed by Tanglewood. When not rocking out with the band, he studies on ATM’s Performing Musician course in York.

Working for the BBC
Ex –ATM York student Tom Maynard has landed himself a top job working in radio archiving at the BBC. A typical day for Tom at the station involves re-mastering old analogue reels of audio tape to restore it’s quality and audibility, digitalising all the old analogue shows and editing the audio. Tom says “This is the perfect type of job for me as I’m a bit obsessed by audio and spend all my spare time messing around with audio making music anyway, so working with audio every day is great fun.”

Sound Advice
Tom Smith recently began work experience as a trainee live sound engineer at local venue Cert 18 in York. 'I took the job because I want to learn specialist techniques like using EQ and desk wiring. Then I can use the knowledge I've gained and apply it to studio sound recording. A tutor at college mentioned the training placement and it sounded like something I wanted to do. I went down to the venue and got the job. I listen to a wide range of music so this also gives me a chance to hear new bands that I wouldn't necessarily choose to see. So far it's going really well. I’m learning all the time and enjoying it. Hopefully it'll turn into a full time, paying job.'

Students raise money for charity
Acoustic performers, including Gaby Milner, Phil Goodrick, One Mike Stand and Hannah Bancarz, raised £70 for Children in Need by putting on a show at the historic Black Swan pub.
